What I read is that mainland Chinese audiences (it supposedly did well in Taiwan) thought it was "too western." Apparently they didn't dig the sort of artsy tone instead of a more standard martial arts movie. Also, the lack of blood was cited as a problem. I think I read all of this at the IMDB's Studio Briefing, so I'm not 100% convinced of the accuracy.
