Kelly, that was an amazing response. I was thinking of writing a similar one, but you beat me. :-)

About the author of Harry Potter: She wrote those books as a blue-collar single mother (if I remember correctly). So I can imagine that the educated elite could find flaws in her books. The books still rule, though.

But I can understand how all the hype surrounding Harry Potter could turn someone off. I avoided reading Anne Rice in high school because she was so faddish and all the annoying people were carrying her books around, and I figured I was too counterculture and subversive to read a successful author. But I finally read one of her books, and I was hooked. Until recently, anyway. "Merrick" was mere ick.
