A French immigrant originally from Hungary, who in 1930 became famous for his photographs of "Paris at night with an insatiable eye, surveying the high and low life of this illustrious, mysterious city." I could only find a short description of him here:

There's also a picture of "Les Escaliers de Montmartre" on Postershop.com, but it doesn't do the original poster justice. Brassaļ's photo is black & white and haunting with subtle mystic greys, while this one is dull blue and lacks contrast against the shadows and trees. Sorry about that! I don't have a better link.
