I'm prejudiced against them because I feel that in each case the original story was just the right length and said everything that needed to be said. In my mind, regardless of the reality, a novel length version is just pointless padding.

Is Nightfall the story based on the planet that has several suns? Something cataclysmic happens every 1500 years or so, and they know that it is coming soon and that everyone goes mad. And when the time comes everything goes dark and everyone goes mad.
Am I thinking of the right story?
If so, then that is an amazing story, but I've never read the novel to compare it, so I probably don't have the right frame of reference. But that is one of my favourite Asimov stories, along with the really short one about the cloud.
