We've never hired "professional" movers. Even when we moved a great distance (from NH to OH) we just rented a truck and did it ourselves, with the help of family and friends. I suppose the professionals might be better at making the best use of available space, stacking things properly, etc., but like you said, they don't *care* about the things they are moving. So it's a tradeoff, and I feel better about doing it myself, even though it is a lot of work.
