I remember an article Douglas Adams once wrote on the subject of copy machine toner ads. He said that copy machine companies are actually in the business of selling toner - that's where all the money is - and that they only develop and sell copy machines so there's a market for toner.

He wrote another article later saying that much the same was true of commercial television networks - I used to have a .sig file with a quote from that one.

"Television companies are not in the business of delivering television programs to their audience,
they're in the business of delivering audiences to their advertisers. (This is why the BBC has
such a schizophrenic time - it's actually in a different business from all its competitors)."
