Most likely it was one of those companies who said "we won't sell or give away your e-mail address" and then did so anyway.

Back when I worked at a silkscreening shop, I'd get a call a week from some toner scam artists. Their pitch was Xerox is going to raise the rates on toner cartridges, but they'll sell us one at their cost. Someone else answered the phone once and got taken in by them. A few weeks later, we had one recharged toner cartridge for $100-$200 more than Xerox's price for two. Being a recharged cartridge, it didn't last nearly as long. We contacted the Better Business Bureau and Xerox.
