it can be hard to tell. News of the Weird ran a story several years ago about a guy who left the gas pump in the car when he started the car. He tried to drive forward but accidentally put it in reverse, shot backwards into another gas pump, while ripping the hose out of his gas pump. This resulted in an explosion, which the guy escaped by shooting forward into some lady's car. As a result of this, he lost his job as a driving instructor.
