An excellent writing guide:

On Writing Well,
by William Knowlton Zinsser

He focuses on non-fiction, but his ideas are applicable in all areas of writing. It's also not the sort of guide that needs to be read from start to finish. His writing is fun and witty, so I often just open up to whichever chapter looks most interesting at the moment and read.
