Amusing factoid: One of my teachers in 9th grade also taught the 8th grade history classes, and she'd give her students pre-tests, and she told us about them once. The question most often answered correctly? The one about Thomas Paine and "Common Sense". People who couldn't name the president could match Paine's name with that of the pamphlet. Now that's a name I wouldn't expect the average 8th-grader to know, but there you are. Hm.
