The reason why I don't like the term "Sci-Fi" is the pronunciation of the i in "Fi" is different than the way it's pronounced in "Fiction".

I've always defined it as Fiction with a basis in Science. From there, you've got such different genres as Hard Science, Science Fantasy, Space Opera, and the like.
