When a runner acquires cyberware (technology placed inside the body), he loses essence - the ephemeral quality that makes us human and holds us together (intra-personal level). Everyone has six points of essence.
For all you still wondering what Shadowrun is, it's a role-playing game that combines cyberpunk and magical fantasy. The premise of the game is magic exists. Graphed over time, the strength of magic would look something like a sine wave. In 2011, magic crossed over the zero line and returned. The game setting takes place almost fifty years after that in a magical-cyberpunkish atmosphere.
It's one of the first games that had a "metagame" story arc (something that became all the rage after Babylon 5 started).
