> Well, no, that's not what it is. In the musical sandwich, the THUMP! THUMP! THUMP! THUMP! is just the bread. No one will eat to it unless you put something else on it, something good. The purpose of the rhythm is to back up the melody.

A couple of days ago, I was stopped at a traffic light, and a guy playing loud music pulled up next to me. However.....

....he WASN'T PLAYING RAP!!!!! Nope, he was playing some honest-to-goodness rock music, complete with wailing electric guitar and lyrics that were sung rather than shouted. Man, I just about rejoiced. Right there. Right on the spot. In my car.

Mind you, I *dig* rap music (as a genre; I don't like most rap you hear on the radio). But I'm pretty sick of the 4-wheel ghetto blaster syndrome that subjects me, at frequent intervals and often in the comfort of my own apartment, to a barrage of THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP and so on. To hear some actual rock 'n roll instead was a sweet relief. There's probably a statement about the decline of Western culture in there somewhere, but I don't know what it is. :-)
