Bad to worse

Date: Thursday, May 13, 1999, at 19:01:22 There was a strip of weeds on the other side of my garden, next to the fence. I decided that the best way to cut them was with the riding mower, so I fired it up and headed over there. I had to pass between the compost pile and the lower end of the garden. Didn't make it. One rear wheel slipped off into mud and tilted me at a crazy angle. When I tried to drive it out, the wheel spun and the other wheel slipped in. It didn't have enough traction to get out, so I climbed over the handle bars and tried to pull it out. That didn't work, so I got a long rope and a little winch-like gadget called a "Comealong" and attached it to a piece of 2x4 driven into the ground on the other side of the compost pile. I started winching and put a bunch of tension on the rope. You guessed it. The stake pulled out of the ground, whizzed over my head and right for my new car. Fortunately the window was down and it went in and hit the padded dash. Unfortunately it bounced down and hit the button on the emergency brake, releasing it. Yep, the gearshift was in neutral. So it started to roll and bumped into the right front wheel of the motorhome. I always jack up the front of the motorhome and put blocks under the wheels to keep it level when stored. (There is a slope in the yard.) The car was undamaged, but it knocked the motorhome off the block and it rolled down and struck the foundation of the house, crushing several concrete blocks. This caused the house to drop several inches on that corner while twisting on it's crumbling foundation. It struck the ground with a horrible thud right on top of a here-to-fore unknown earthquake fault, causing it to slip. This resulted in a massive earthquake that split the northern hemisphere in half and the rift is still growing slowly. It doesn't look like we will have to worry about Y2K after all. |
