I am not normally a big fan of oriental food (and yes, I know, the stuff we call "Chinese Food" often is unrelated to the real deal) but Dim Sum was a singular experience which I would like to repeat. One of my co-workers, who is also an old university pal, is from a very traditional Chinese family and tries to broaden the horizons of a few of us now and then. He also took us to a sushi bar he worked at in high school once-- the Japanese have some odd but good ideas with raw fish. >
Heh. My Chinese family would absolutely *slay* me if they heard me say this... but if I had nothing but one cuisine to choose, I'd take Japanese sushimaki, tempura-fried vegetables, thick Udon noodles, sticky rice, and miso bonito soup every day for the rest of my life. The flavours are clean and crisp, subtly fragrant and textured, and never 'greasy.' It's hard to get tired of it. Plus the traditional Japanese diet is unbearably healthy. Of course, I'd want to get in some Dim Sum dessert items occasionally...
> Hmm... Sometime soon I will have to see about going again. Not only was the food excellent, but the price was very low as well. Oh, and I had both Har Gow and Shui-Mye and can see why they're so popular. (I recognized the descriptions, not the names.) :-) >
How about the little yellow, sweet egg custards in French pastry shells? Love 'em... or hate 'em?
Oh yes, you can't beat the ticket price. A typical Dim Sum gourmet spread enjoyed with my friends costs about $10 per person. I recently got annoyed because several favorite items were increased to (gasp!) $3.75 to serve four people. Oh, the horror! :) That figure about right in your hometown, Don?
