For me, at least, it's a question of the spirit of the thing.

The Disney version, although it took some liberties (not as many as you suggest), keeps the tone of the original - it's a wild, surreal, meaningless, dreamlike, jumble.

Lewis Carroll *wanted* AiW to be wild and meaningless. In writing it, he was deliberately bucking a children's fantasy tradition in which the protagonist's adventures are designed to make [him|her] A Better Person by teaching [him|her] something about [him|her]self.

Enter this new adaptation - in which Alice's adventures in Wonderland are expressly to help her become A Better Person (in this case, one who can stand up for herself).

Exit Paul in disgust.
