More reliable is putting your watch right up to your eye and seeing behind you that way. It's not exactly inconspicuous, except, perhaps, when you have your head carefully positioned in your arms so that it looks like you're resting but you're really spying on the ceiling tiles.
When I wore glasses, I was fascinated to see the reflection of my own retina when the light was right. It was weird to see this reddish-colored object with little black lines over it. I was also fascinated by the sight of my own eyelashes, because I saw a magnified version of them. I always thought this would come in handy when I got something in my eye, but I guess the whites don't reflect well.
