You beat me to it, Syrinx. Grish misquoted me. No Republican has ever claimed the White House without Ohio. Also, Ohio has historically split Dem/Rep with close to the same percentages as nationally. That is why Ohio is considered a "bellweather" state. We did go slightly more Republican in this last election than nationally though. I hope we aren't losing our touch.
Though the thing about Ohio being "Republican" critical still holds true!
For the record, only three times in the last hundred years has the winner nationally not carried Ohio. All three times it was a Democrat that won without Ohio.
