I think it had something to do with guns and greeting people as you drive pass (this was with Stage Coaches and Caragies of course). I can't remember for sure, but I think it had a larger reason than anti-British sentiment. Thats as far as my memory serves.

If this is true the French would have picked it up from us when they aided in our Revolution, and thats were Napoleon got it from.
