I don't know if that's how it is in the South. But my Californian roommate used the word that way. I often had a case of Mountain Dew stashed under my bed at school, and Andy would say, "Hey, can I have one of those Cokes?" I tried to break him of it, but he probably still calls every soft drink a Coke.
