Those would be bits of the red and green glace cherries mentioned in my other post in this thread. I know they don't look like cherries. They don't look like *anything*. They scare me too.
I think traditionally you're supposed to bake little silver things like coins into the cake too. The person who gets the coin in their slice gets good luck in the New Year or something. Unless they break a tooth on it, of course, or swallow it and choke and die.
