a chain of events

You might find this chain of events interesting. People are constantly contacting me saying that they have an old motorscooter to sell. Some of them actually bring it by the house, but usually the story is that it's in a barn or shed and they want me to come and see it.

The call that came about a week ago was from a man in Murfreesboro, where I went to school back in the 50's. He had found an old scooter in his grandfather's barn and wanted to sell it. He didn't do a very good job of describing it, but since I was going to be in that area anyway, I agreed to go take a look.

I wasn't surprised when it turned out to be an old Honda dirt bike with a blown engine and flat tires. It was not the kind of thing I look for.
But further back I saw some old ladder-back chairs that looked interesting and asked if they were for sale. I got them for a buck each and asked it there were any other antiques in there. He mentioned an old car.

We pulled a tarp off it and I could see that it was a coupe, 40's vintage, and a Ford. Someone had repaired the body and sprayed it with primer. I went around to the front and found that it was a 1946 model. Now I was getting interested, because I used to own a '46 Ford Club Coupe. It had no headlights and the grille was in the trunk. The tires were flat and rotten. Dust and dirt were everwhere and the seats were in shreds, but the body was in good condition and all the glass was there. The running boards and bumpers had been replaced and it had the original flathead V8 engine. I checked the glove box for an owner's manual and title, but they weren't there. However, I found half a dozen old registration slips and two of them had my name on them! It was my old car!

This is the kind of thing antique collectors dream about, and unfortunately, it is just a dream. I've always felt that somewhere in a barn, my first car is still sitting there waiting for me to find it. Maybe my old fat-tired bicycle is there too. And my BB gun.
