> Oh, and with respect to marks -- the important thing is whether or not you understand the subject matter. If you understand it, then you're getting value out of your education; furthermore, you'll do well in university. In the long run, if you know your stuff and you get your degree, nobody will remember how you did in high school.

Exactly. I used to have friends whose parents PAID them for each A on their report cards. I tried to convince my mom that it was a good idea, but she never went for it. If I got an A- on a report card, or even a progress report, she demanded to know WHY I didn't get an A. If I got a B+, she thought it was ridiculous that I couldn't have done well enough to go up to an A-. If I got a B, she was MAD. I once got a C on a progress report and she threatened to take away my telephone privileges if I got a C on my actual report card.

As Spacebar said, the point is to learn, not to get good grades. Did I learn a lot in high school? No. Did I get good grades? Yes. My first two years of college were miserable. While I intend to hold my children accountable for their school work, I do not intend to punish or reward them for their grades. If they make an effort, they will learn something in the process, no matter what the final grade is. Sometimes we learn more from our mistakes than from our successes.

No, I think it applies here. As of right now, Spacebar and I do hereby ENFORCE RULE SIX!!! (I have a sneaking suspicion that this secret involves boys, though.)
