a note about Old DW

Date: Monday, November 20, 2000, at 18:54:36 I watched the NASCAR cup race today. It was postponed because of rain yesterday. It was the final race for 53-year-old three-time champion, Darrel Waltrip. Old DW didn't have a great race today. He started 43rd (last) and finished about 36th, several laps behind. But his daughters gave the "Gentlemen, start your engines!" command, and lots of people said lots of nice things about him. Like Richard Petty and seveal other greats, he helped built a minor sport into a major one. He won 84 races and only Richard and David Pearson ever won more than that. He will be missed on the track, but like Richard, he'll still be there. Not as a car owner, but as a broadcaster. He will be good at that, too. I almost forgot. Jerry Nadeau was the winner today. His first win in a cup car. He'll win more. |
