Lest any accuse me of being blockheaded, I now hold a view approximately 160% from when I wrote the post this is in reply to. I still dislike that electors are allowed to vote differently than their constituents. I also think that distribution of electoral votes by county may work better than distribution by state.

People in different states often have different needs. Suburban and rural people mostly voted for Bush in this particular election, while urban areas voted for Gore. The result is that Gore won less than 680 counties and Bush won more than 2400. The population is much higher in those counties Gore won, as they are urban, but the difference is a much larger percentage than the difference in the popular vote. Therefore, I will venture that, if we claim to be a republic (if we respect the rights of minorities as well as the majority), then it seems Bush would be the nation's choice. Of course, the vote isn't done by county, so that doesn't matter. We're just waiting on Florida still, as they use clairvoyants to officially determine who really won.
