Just a clarification which I feel is made necessary by a discussion I just had in RinkChat: I do support the concept of welfare, and I do realize that in many cases, these sorts of events do not occur as I have described them. I was referring to one specific case I encountered when growing up, and made the (possibly erroneus) assumption that similar situations do exist elsewhere. I hope that clears things up a bit, and I welcome any further discussion on the topic.
