A shorter version is "The quick brown fox jumps over lazy dogs." But I guess it's like "Beam me up, Scotty," -- the quote got too famous to be remembered correctly. Either that or the person who originally thought it up didn't realize. My favorite is "Pack my box with five dozen liquor jugs," though, which is one letter shorter than the short version of the "fox" quote.
