"The Wicker Man" (1973). Christopher Lee, Edward Woodward.
I haven't actually seen this film, but around this time every year for some reason (heh), various film critics pop up to suggest this British film as the "scariest movie ever made".
It's a story about the battle between Christian and Paganistic belief. Described as "a whole new genre/category of its own, as it combines horror, eroticism, mystery, music, religion, and fantasy." The phrases "extremely powerful but unsettling", "incredibly haunting ending", and "disturbing (though incredibly tame for cynical 1990s)" keep being mentioned by reviewers. I admit I'm intrigued by this. There are many films which go for brief thrills and chills (like the eerie spinning heads in "Jacob's Ladder"...another creepy movie), but for me to be actually *scared* by a flick, it better give me something to think about which challenges complacency. Hope I can find the video edit version of this, at least.
Quote: Policeman Howie (Woodward): "But they are... are naked!" Lord Summerisle (Lee): "Naturally. It's much too dangerous to jump through the fire with your clothes on!"
