Well, the original reason for the electoral colelge made lots of sense. The country was so big, and communication was so poor, that it would have taken weeks, if not months, to actually get all of the votes in and elect someone. The members of the electoral college were intended to - and did - vote the general sentiment of their state. I'm not exactly sure abuot some of the details, but that's the general idea.

It made sense then - but I agree that it doesn't make sense now. We HAVE the technology to vote and have the result, seconds later, somewhere entirely different.

The electoral colelge started out with the best of intentions, but it's rather worn out now...
