You cannot abstain from voting and send a good message to the politicians. The politicians do not see you as a 'citizen who is fed up with the goverment and is not voting because he is patriotic'. They politicians will see you as someone who'd rather watch the latest episode of Friends than exercise what little power they have over the future of their country.
