I personally prefer cats. Two words: litter box. I really prefer a pet that can maintain itself in most respects.

Right now I haven't got any, though, because I'm in an apartment which is too small for pets of any variety. In the past I've had hamsters, which are somewhat neat but tend to go to the bathroom rather more often than one would like.

My wife prefers dogs, so we're probably going to end up with some of each once we've got a bigger place.
