Action Comics #1, 1939, First apperance of Superman, also the first Super-Hero of any kind. Start of the 'Golden Age' of comic books. I don't think there is any thing that is officially called the end of the 'Golden Age' but it pettered out rather quickly after WWII ended. In the 50's people though comic books were makeing kids criminal, gay, and in the girls case, up-ity.
