I read an interesting essay recently that pointed out that, in Wells' story, Griffin (the mad scientist) tried out his process on inanimate objects first - meaning that if he'd really wanted to, he could have made invisible food and invisible clothing for himself.
The guy who wrote the essay had an interesting idea about why Griffin didn't, but I forget what it was. :o)
