Ahem...allow me.
It's not a silly question at all. Sam has explained the origins of the name "the Rink" once or twice before in this forum and in the Site Journal, but it's been a little while, and maybe due for a re-explanation.
Follow the link I've posted below and you'll go to the most recent RinkForum post that Sam made concerning the name, and on that post he provides another hyperlink to the Site Journal entry from waaaay back which goes into more detail on what exactly the Rink is.
