I think the reason why people want to add more school hours is because they think that the kids who are behind in their work will have more work time, and hence get more work done. I never completed my homework at school, but I do have a good work ethic. Simply piling time on won't make me work any faster or improve the quality, but will detract from my home experience (where I get my highest quality work done).
I agree, more hours/days isn't the answer.
