If I found a house in New York, I'd still have the commute problem. Coming in from Long Island or north of White Plains would be as bad of a commute.

Unfortunately, I don't feel like spending around $1300 a month on rent for a small apartment in a noisy city, so that means I can't live in Manhattan. I've got all these books and some furniture, a car, and things. I like space.

By living in Jersey, I have "cheap" rent ($625/month), a parking space, storage in the basement, a decent-sized bedroom and living room, a quiet neighborhood, and real grocery stores within a five minute's drive. Unfortunately, I've got to pay for it with the three hour commute each work day. If we lived in the city (by which, I mean Manhattan) and kept the car, we'd have to pay anywhere from $300 to $500 a month to garage it. If we sold the car, we'd be city-bound.

A job in New Jersey? I get to spend an extra two hours on the bus with my wife, thanks to the commute. Plus, I'd have to drive to my office in Jersey -- a horrible thought. At least going to and from New York City there's mass transit.
