I'll stick my hat in the ring as this sort of thing is my job.
Checking that the drivers are right for the NIC is good. Checking various internet options is also worth a try. Check things like 'hang-up after idle for x mins'. 'No hang-up after checking mail' Also check connections - is something loose somewhere?
