Not to be a total nitpick, but wasn't the original post about fireworks?
There are many laws pertaining to fireworks in my area, but I can say with confidence that they were created for the safety of children.
You see, the laws were most likely not created to protect me from eating a bottle rocket, but to protect Jimbo from throwing a M-80 in my face.
These laws are in place for a good reason, and that is that (as said before) children take stupid risks, do stupid things, and are generally pretty stupid when it comes to fireworks.
I had a classmate once whose life had been forever changed by fireworks.
When he was a small boy, a defective firecracker flew up his shorts and exploded.
Now, it wasn't he who was playing with the firecrackers, it was some other boys unrelated to him.
But right now, I'm not going to say that laws against fireworks have stopped this type of thing from happening; the same thing is said about gun laws, and if a criminal wants to kill someone, he/she will get a gun, because he/she is a CRIMINAL.
I *hate* gun control laws. In my opinion, they are useless and generally contribute to the revokation of freedoms that I cherish.
I also have a comment on this quote:
"...car accidents and collisions in America cause more deaths every year than all diseases and health-related problems combined. "
I find this very difficult to belive, since illnesses associated with tobbaco kill someone every eight seconds-- however, since I do not know where you have obtained this information, I have no way of verifiing it. Oh well.
