HOW much for a gallon of gas?!!! posted by Beasty on Monday, June 26, 2000, at 02:36:21:
you guys have been paying that much for a very long time. Your economy is set up for it. And you have an awesome public transit system.
By contrast, the States doesn't have much of a transportation system at all (busses suck, only a very few cities have subways, and only the east coast has a fairly fast train - -- though still nothing like what you Europeans have had for years). In short, we're set up as a driving society, and our economy is set up for gas that's significantly less than 2 bucks a gallon. Your jobs pay you enough to compensate for the higher gas prices, ours don't, so when our gas prices spike, even if they're still nowhere near yours, we feel the impact of those prices much more than you feel the impact of your prices.
> Does anyone in the States feel really annoyed at how much they have to pay for a gallon of gas? > > Spare a thought for us Brits. We currently pay on average 90 pence for a litre. > > How much is that to an American? > > Well, one US gallon is approx 3.8 litres so that's £3.42 already. At an estimated exchange rate of one pound Sterling to 1.60 US dollars we are talking $5.47. and that's just on average! > > Anybody out there ever paid more than $2 a gallon? > > Bea "content with your lot and don't be lu" sty
