I'd like to add my comment to all of this.

Think about the word 'redneck' for a second. What does it mean? 'Red-neck'. To me, that means someone who has the physical characteristic of a red neck caused by sunburn, nothing more.

Don't get offended when people use words incorrectly. I could call my cat a gila monster, but that doesn't mean my cat is a gila monster.

Pity those who are racist and prejudgicial, because they are uneducated and weak. Take their opinions with a grain of salt.
