Ah -- you haven't been making mashed potatoes correctly. Just a guess: you only add butter and milk (maybe some salt).

Next time, add some shredded provolone cheese and freshly-cracked black pepper when you add the butter and the milk. Yummy.

When my wife makes them, there's celery salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and pepper in there along with the standard milk and butter. Zesty! Definately not bland or uninteresting.
