Squirrels gone nutz

We've lived in this house almost 30 years. It's surrounded by a mixed hardwood forest with plenty of mature oak and hickory trees. We've always enjoyed our nutty little neighbors, the squirrels. They would come up to the patio door and peer in, or lick the salt off the brick step where we cranked home-made icecream. Sometimes we just salted the bricks to keep them coming by. They have a tendency to hide nuts in anything left ourside, like the barbeque grill, but we just shake them out when we need to use it.
But here lately, the squirrels have been behaving strangly. They dig in the flower beds. Even flower pots get emptied. They sit up in the oak trees all day and cut off twigs and drop them to the ground. They never did that before. The average twig has about half a dozen leaves on it and they litter the yard, slowly turning brown. They aren't eating them, or building a nest, they just cut them off and let them fall. When they get tired of that, game they come down and dig up some more flowers. They started digging flowers last year, but twig-dropping is new this year.
I think they have gone completely nuts. Does anybody know how to psychoanalize a nutty squirrel? How"driving me nuts"ard
