I realize that this is a bit late as this thread is quite old and worn out by now, but I just thought to say that by Sam's logic, bacon is not a topping either. By adding bacon, you now have a Bacon Burger, or Bacon Cheese Burger for which the bacon is like the cheese and is, therefor, not a topping, but part of the burger. Same would be said for jalapenos and chili.

Now by my logic, any time you go to a restaurant and the menu has a section the reads:

Add any item below to any burger:
Cheese............. .30
Jalapenos.......... .25
Chili.................. .50
Bacon............... .45

then those items are toppings regardless of wether you can order them already on the burger or have them added from the menu. I do concede that the initial cheese is a topping for a hamburger, not a cheese burger, but the addition of extra cheese is going to result in a higher cost for the burger, and, therefor, *is* a topping.
