That reminds me of a Far Side cartoon which has a dog eagerly standing on the bow of a Viking ship. In the background we see his master and a couple shipmates returning from a raping and pillaging rampage on a now smoldering city.
His intent was to portray that certain characteristic of loyalty that only dogs possess. It doesn't matter what you do for a living or how bad of a person you are, your dog will always be happy to see you come home.
