In Australia, when I was in primary school, it depended on where in the country you were. I remember some of our workbooks actually had separate examples of the writing style preferred by the Education Department in each state.

The style I was taught sounds more like the American style, with lots of loops, all the letters connected, and that funny way of writing s.

When my younger brother was still in primary school, they switched to a new style, half-printing, where each letter was written cursive, but the letters weren't allowed to be joined up. I still think it's completely ludicrous, but my brother doesn't seem to mind it.
