In New Mexico, we had garters, bull snakes, and western diamondback rattlers. As for bugs, we had biting flies for 2 weeks out of the year, and that's about it. Mosquitos can't survive in the dry. (you do, depending on where you camp, have to check your shoes in the morning for scorpions, however ;)
