I always looked down my nose at certain fellow students in high school. Specifically, the ones who I'd see sprawled out on the floor making a poster for some reason, and using unnecessary quotes as in:

Go class of "86"

I know that they *meant* to say:

Go class of '86

Since the apostrophe is simply taking the place of other characters just like in every other contraction in our language. Evidently, they couldn't quite make that connection.
