I've received several warnings about the ILOVEYOU virus, all of which say totally different things, and at least one of which described the offending file as being iloveyou.txt. As in, a text file - no binary code to execute. :-P

Heh. Just in the interests of public education, the file is labeled "LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT.vbs". I suppose that the ".vbs" on the end goes unnoticed, while the .TXT makes people assume that it's a text file.

And now for something completely scarier: my co-workers and I were talking this morning about how an evil genius would take advantage of the spread of this virus to spread another email, labeled something like "How to get rid of the ILOVEYOU virus," with instructions to click on the attachment to automatically remove the virus and restore the system to its original pristine state. Of course, the "cure" would simply be another malicious script. And ya know what? Turns out that someone had already done just that, and our IT people had caught several virus-laden emails, titled "Cure for the ILOVEYOU virus", coming into the company's email system.

So watch out for those, and use *trusted* anti-virus remedies (like Symantec's) instead of clicking on the insta-cure that some nice person happens to send to you by email.

Iss "on the plus side, I think this represents an increase to my 'evil-genius quotient' score" achar
