Thank you. That's what I was trying to say but obviously didn't well enough. Crime cannot and should not be dismissed simply because it's worse elsewhere. I wasn't trying to say that. I was, however, trying to illustrate that the paranoia that drives the particular "take back the night" marches that occur in Durham, NH, is largely imagined and fights a cause that does not particularly need addressing. Durham already *has* free escort services, those blue-light outdoor phone things, and so forth, and there are fairly convenient routes that circumvent the spookiest parts of the campus. This is a cause that does not need fighting, while others do, and I don't share Tom's view that these protests do any good at all. So maybe a few are comforted; for more, I'm sure, the effect is the opposite.
