There's also an Australian kids' book with an Australian version, where it's an emu up a gum tree. (Which, apart from anything else, at least scans.)
Emus are also flightless - in the story the narrator's True Love sent it by air mail/parachute drop, and he spends the rest of the book trying to get it down.
